Innehåll · Contents
Fifteen chapters, each with something you can do tonight.
Every chapter ends with a fifteen-minute task, two questions to ask yourself, and the workbook pages to use.
Part 1Why
- 1What döstädning is, and what it is not
The word, where it comes from, and why it is about the living.
- 2What a house leaves behind
What a family actually faces, in plain and general terms.
- 3Five rules to keep
The short list that keeps you going when it gets hard.
Part 2Sorting the house
- 4Big and boring first: the order of rooms
Ten rooms in order, garage first and photographs last.
- 5Deciding: the piles and the questions that settle them
Keep, give, sell, donate or let go, and the “maybe” box with a date on it.
- 6Ask before you give
Gifts while you are living, and how to take a kind “no”.
- 7Where things go in America
Donation, consignment, recycling and the things nobody wants.
Part 3The hard things
- 8Photographs, letters and keepsakes
From a shoebox of prints to one album with names on the back.
- 9Private things
The drawer you would rather nobody else opened.
- 10The one binder
Where your papers and accounts are kept. Locations, never passwords.
Part 4People
- 11Say it out loud
Talking with your family, with scripts for the hard moments.
- 12When you are the adult child
Helping a parent, and sharing things fairly among siblings.
- 13Moving to a smaller place
Measure first, choose second.
Part 5Keeping it clear
- 14The Swedish year
Small seasonal habits that keep a home light.
- 15Your one box, and a letter
What to keep for yourself, and what to write.

För vem · Who it is for
Written for people who want to do this calmly.
It suits you if you
- want to sort a little at a time, not in one exhausting weekend
- want your family to know where things are and what you wish for them
- like paper and pencil, or reading on a tablet in large type
- are helping a parent and want a plan you can share
Good to know
Chapters 2 and 7 describe how things work in the United States. The rest works anywhere.
Ärligt · Honestly
What we promise about the book itself.
- Every number has a source. Facts are checked against public sources, listed at the back with the date we checked them.
- Stories are labelled. Each chapter opens with a short illustrative scene. The people in it are not real.
- We say when to get help. Every chapter names the kind of professional to call for the things a book should not decide.
- No passwords on paper. The binder chapter records where things are kept, never account numbers or passwords.

Om oss · Who is behind this
Hi, I am Anders.
I live in a small red timber house in the Swedish countryside and make the videos on The Swedish Way. This guide puts the most useful ideas from them in order: sorting a house one room at a time, giving things away while you can see them enjoyed, and talking with your family about what matters.
Facts in the guide are checked against public sources, listed with dates at the back.

Frågor · Questions
Questions people ask first
Is it a printed book or a download?
A download. You get PDF files straight away and nothing is shipped. The pictures of a book and a tablet show the cover and real pages.
How do I open it on an iPad or phone?
Tap the download link in the email or on the page you see after paying. The guide opens in your device's PDF viewer. On an iPad or iPhone, tap the share button and choose “Books” to keep it on your shelf. Step-by-step help for every device is on the questions page.
Which workbook file should I print?
US Letter in the United States and Canada, A4 almost everywhere else. Choose large print if small type is tiring. Print one-sided, in black and white.
Can I fill in the workbook on a tablet?
You can write on it with an app that lets you annotate PDFs, but it is designed to be printed and kept in a binder, which most people find easier.
Does it work outside the United States?
Yes. Two chapters describe American practice (what a family faces after a death, and where things can go); everything else works anywhere. The workbook comes in A4.
Is this a will or a legal document?
No. It helps you sort and write down your wishes. For wills, trusts and powers of attorney, speak to a licensed professional where you live.
